Geometry as Process — Direction, Distance, and a Rule
A Shift in Starting Point
The previous part ended with a limitation. The ε-disk — replacing dimensionless points with objects of finite size — provided a useful intermediate perspective. It unified polygons and circles under a common representation, made resolution explicit, and removed certain artifacts.
But it did not resolve the deeper issue. Each disk was itself a circle, and therefore depended on the very primitive it was meant to replace. The construction relied on what it was trying to avoid.
What this revealed was not a failure, but a misidentified starting point. The issue was not the size of the primitive. It was the assumption that geometry is built from objects located in space.
Once that assumption is made explicit, an alternative becomes possible:
What if geometry is not built from objects at locations, but from processes?
A Generative View
Consider a simple observation.
A nautilus shell grows in a pattern that can be described as a logarithmic spiral. In classical mathematics, this is expressed through an equation. But the organism itself does not operate in terms of coordinates or equations.
Instead, it follows a local rule: each new chamber is placed at a fixed angle relative to the previous one, with a consistent scaling factor. The global form emerges from repeated application of that rule.
Similar patterns appear in many natural systems. Branching structures, growth processes, and iterative formations often arise from local rules rather than global descriptions.
This suggests a different perspective:
instead of describing a shape as a completed object, describe the process that generates it.
Three Parameters
In this framework, a shape is constructed through a sequence of steps defined by:
- d — the step size
- θ — the initial direction
- δ(n) — a function describing how the direction changes at each step
Starting from an anchor, each step is taken with length d, and the direction is updated according to δ(n).
- If δ is constant, the result is a regular polygonal path
- If δ varies, the trajectory curves according to the rule
- If d changes, the scale evolves along the path
This defines a generative process. The shape is the trajectory produced by iterating the rule.
At this level, it is useful to distinguish between:
- intrinsic structure — encoded by δ(n), describing how steps relate
- contextual parameters — such as d and θ, which depend on scale and orientation
This distinction will become more formal later, but it is already visible here.
Relation to Existing Representations
This perspective is not entirely unfamiliar.
Vector graphics systems — such as SVG or drawing APIs — represent shapes as sequences of commands: move, line, curve, arc. These are instructions that generate a path, rather than lists of points.
Similarly, systems like turtle graphics describe geometry through sequences of moves and turns.
These are practical representations developed for computation and rendering. They are not intended as foundations of geometry, but they illustrate that:
describing shapes as processes is a workable and often effective approach.
The framework here can be seen as a conceptual generalization of that idea.
What Different Rules Produce
Different choices of δ(n) and d lead to different families of curves.
- Constant δ produces regular polygonal paths
- Slowly varying δ produces smooth curvature
- Step-dependent δ can generate oscillatory or transitional behavior
For example:
- A constant turn with increasing step size produces spiral-like structures
- A decreasing turn can produce curves that gradually straighten
- Periodic δ can generate wave-like patterns
These correspond to familiar geometric forms, but here they arise from a unified generative mechanism.
It is important to interpret this carefully: the framework does not replace classical definitions, but provides an alternative way of constructing and organizing them.
Composition and Irregular Curves
More complex curves can be constructed by combining segments defined by different rules.
Each segment is governed by its own δ(n), and transitions between segments encode changes in behavior. This is analogous to piecewise constructions in classical geometry or spline-based representations in computation.
The complexity of a curve is then related to the number and nature of these segments, rather than to its length or resolution.
This perspective makes explicit a distinction between:
- regular structure (simple rules)
- compositional complexity (how many rules are combined)
Separating Shape from Position
A key feature of this framework is that the generative rule does not determine a position in space.
The sequence defined by d, θ, and δ(n) describes how steps relate to each other, but not where the sequence begins. Placement must be specified externally.
This separates:
- the shape, defined by its generative rule
- the placement, defined by an external reference
Classical geometry captures a similar idea through congruence, but typically encodes position directly in coordinates. Here, the separation is part of the construction itself.
This also removes the need to treat points as fundamental primitives. The starting anchor functions as a reference, not as a geometric object with independent structure.
A Computational Analogy
There is a natural analogy to computation.
A simple computational model consists of:
- a current state
- a transition rule
- an iterative process
The generative framework for shapes has a similar structure:
- the current step corresponds to a state
- δ(n) acts as a transition rule
- iterating the rule produces a trajectory
Under this interpretation, a geometric shape can be viewed as the output of a process defined by a rule.
This is an analogy rather than a formal equivalence, but it suggests a connection between:
- generative descriptions of geometry
- rule-based systems in computation
Exploring this connection more precisely would require additional development.
What the Framework Provides
At this stage, the framework introduces a different way of organizing geometric information:
- shapes are defined by generative rules
- position is treated as external
- complexity is tied to compositional structure
- resolution is not intrinsic, but contextual
This does not yet replace classical formulations. It provides an alternative starting point from which similar structures may be reconstructed.
The more abstract relational framework developed later in the series generalizes this idea further, replacing step-based constructions with composable relations. The present formulation can be understood as a concrete instance of that broader approach.
What Remains Open
Several questions arise naturally from this perspective:
- How general is this representation? Can all classical curves be expressed in this form?
- How does the framework extend to surfaces and higher-dimensional structures?
- What is the precise relationship to existing areas such as discrete geometry or constructive approaches?
- What notion of equivalence between generative processes best captures geometric identity?
These questions mark the boundary of what has been established and what remains to be developed.
They also point toward the next step: making the notion of equivalence precise, which leads into the more abstract relational framework.
